Hyalotheca dissiliens, a species of freshwater green algae belonging to the group known as desmids (family Desmidiaceae).Unlike many other desmids that exist as single cells, Hyalotheca species link together to form long chains.Mucilage Sheath: The most striking feature (visible as the clear "halo" or rectangle surrounding the dark cells in the drawing) is a thick, transparent mucilage (gelatinous) sheath. This sheath protects the algae and helps it float or adhere to surfaces.Cell Shape: Each individual cell is roughly cylindrical or barrel-shaped, typically with a slight indentation (constriction) in the middle, which is a hallmark of desmids.
