Historical view of Ringgenberg, Bern Canton, Switzerland, on Lake Brienz with church and castle ruins (left behind the church). When Knight Kuno von Brienz was appointed Imperial Bailiff of the Lake Brienz region by the German Emperor in 1230, he had Ringgenberg Castle built. In 1670/71, the inhabitants of Ringgenberg built a church on the castle grounds under the leadership of Abraham Dünz. For this purpose, parts of the ruins were demolished and used to construct the new building. Only the Romanesque residential tower and a few sections of wall remain of the castle complex. Wood engraving based on a drawing by Edward Theodore Compton (English painter, 1849 - 1921), published in 1876.
