Portrait of Sir Walter Ralegh
Sir Walter Ralegh (1554-1618). Under Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen, he explored the coast of North America, naming it Virginia for his sovereign. His efforts to colonize Virginia, in particular the colony at Roanoke Island, failed. He also wrote poetry and history and made several more voyages during periods of court favor.
