Ed Miliband speech to Labour's Local Government Group

Ed Miliband speech to Labour's Local Government Group; Ed Miliband speech SOT- The second myth is the idea that somehow it is the fault of local authorities that the cuts are hitting the frontline / we know the back office budget is something like 9 per cent of total spending but they are asking for 28 per cent cuts on average / it is one of the most pernicious deceits of this government when David Cameron gets up at PMQs and says 'well-run councils don't need to make cuts to frontline services' / when I asked him about Bromley Council, closing 13 of 16 children's centres, he had no answer / it is a myth, a pernicious myth / the Tory chair of the LAG says they are detached from reality, they are on another planet / the Liberal Democrats signed the letter a few weeks ago - talking of on another planet [laughter and applause] / the third myth is that somehow Labour Councils that are making cuts are doing it for politically motivated reasons, what a disgraceful slur on our councils / they've got this localism bill in the House of Commons / this Conservative-led government are interested in devolving responsibility for the cuts, they're not interested in devolving power to local authorities / it's responsibility they want to devolve so that they can shirk the blame for the cuts that are being made / the other myth that stands behind the cuts at local government is somehow the idea that these cuts were inevitable, that they are cuts Labour should take responsibilty for, and there is no alternative
