Severe Mediterranean storm disrupts daily life in Italy and Malta

ROME, ITALY - JANUARY 20: A powerful storm system sweeping across the Mediterranean has disrupted daily life in Italy and Malta, bringing strong winds, torrential rain and rough seas that have caused damage and injuries, according to local media reports on Jan. 20.In Italy, the worst impacts were reported in the southern region of Calabria as well as on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.Operations and vessel movements at the major port of Gioia Tauro in Calabria were halted from Tuesday evening due to hazardous conditions. Heavy rainfall in San Mauro Marchesato, in the province of Crotone, triggered a landslide that caused part of a cemetery to collapse, exposing some coffins.Italy’s Civil Protection Department issued “red” alerts for parts of Calabria’s southern coast, Sicily’s eastern coast and Sardinia’s eastern coastline, and “orange” alerts elsewhere, warning residents—especially in coastal areas—of risks including flooding, violent gusts and large waves.Schools in Calabria and Sicily remained closed for a second day.In Malta, the storm—referred to locally as “Storm Harry”—toppled trees and billboards and damaged buildings, with Marsascala, Sliema and Birzebbuga among the hardest-hit coastal localities.Maltese officials urged residents to stay indoors, while the national meteorological office said conditions are expected to begin easing after this evening.
