Charon, the ferryman controls his boat with the dead on board - stock illustration
In Greek and Roman mythology, Charon is the gloomy, old ferryman who brings the dead in a boat across the Dead River - mostly the Acheron, often the rivers Lethe and Styx - for an obolus (coin), so that they are brought into the empire of Hades, the ruler of the underworld. Illustration from 19th century.
