Historical view of the Devil's Bridge on St. Gotthard Street in the Schöllenen Gorge - a gorge formed by the upper Reuss in the Swiss canton of Uri between the towns of Göschenen to the north and Andermatt to the south. It provides access to the St Gotthard Pass. Presumably around 1200, it was the Walser people from the Urseren Valley, which could only be reached from the north via the Bäzberg, who made the gorge accessible for the first time by building a mule track with several bridges, a daring feat for the time and a significant step in the development of Switzerland. Wood engraving based on a drawing by Gustav Adolf Closs (German painter, 1864 - 1938), published in 1876.
