Exoplanets around a pulsar - stock illustration
Artwork of the millisecond pulsar known as PSR 1257+12, located 3000 lightyears away in the constellation of Virgo. The star, with spins once every 0.006219 seconds, is also known as Lich. Surprisingly, this pulsar - a neutron star emitting beams of radio waves - is orbited by three exoplanets, called Draugr, Poltergeist and Phobetor. In fact these were the first planets ever found around another star. The latter two are massive worlds, probably rocky, each around four times the mass of the Earth. The innermost world, Draugr, seen at the beginning of the clip, is much smaller, with only 0.02 Earth masses. The rapid spin of the pulsar has been greatly slowed down in this depiction, for clarity.
