Historical map of the Franklin Expedition (1845-1848), woodcut, published 1883 - stock illustration
Historical overview map of the Franklin Expedition. It lasted from 1845 until its failure in 1848 and was the third major and final expedition of the British polar explorer Sir John Franklin (British Rear Admiral, 1786–1847). Its goal was to be the first to sail the Northwest Passage completely from east to west, to map it, and thus to find a shorter sea route from Europe to Asia. The expedition failed catastrophically; all participants perished in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Wood engraving, published in 1883.
