This evocative nineteenth-century engraving, titled "De Tomsk à Irkoutsk : Caravane de thé en hiver," illustrates a traditional winter transport caravan traveling along the historic Great Tea Road. Based on a photograph by M. Bogdanovitch, the scene captures a long line of horses harnessed to heavy sledges, each equipped with the characteristic high wooden duga arch over the neck to provide tension for the shafts. These caravans were essential for transporting large quantities of Chinese tea and other goods across the vast, snow-covered stretches of Siberia before the full completion of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
