King Philip, the son of Massasoit and chief of the Wampanoag. One of the leaders and most famous fighters in the First Indian War of 1675 to 1678 against the English colonists in New England. His Wampanoag name was Metacom, Metacomet, or Pometacom. He died in a battle with the British colonists in 1676 when he was shot by an Indian warrior fighting with the British. This engraving is from a US History published in 1833.
