In ancient Egypt, professional mourners were hired women who performed at funerals, often acting as the goddesses Isis and Nephthys. They would wail, cast dust on their heads, and scratch their faces to show grief, and sometimes they had the names of these goddesses tattooed on their shoulders. These mourners played a crucial role in the funeral rites, and their performances were essential for the ritual to be considered complete.
