Phlebitis of the lower limb - stock illustration

Superficial venous thrombosis of the lower limb. Venous valves are folds in the walls of veins that force blood to flow unidirectionally toward the heart, without reflux. Blood can accumulate and stagnate in the cusps of the valves, forming a thrombus (as here in the internal saphenous vein of the leg). This thrombus can cause obstruction (thrombosis) and inflammation (phlebitis) of the vein, as well as an embolism (by detachment of a fragment of the thrombus)
