In the distance is the suspension bridge and in the foreground the railway bridge, both crossing the Menai Strait between mainland Wales and the Isle of Anglesey. The suspension bridge was designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1826. The railway bridge, called the Britannia Bridge, was designed as a tubular bridge by Robert Stephenson and was opened in 1850. Following a fire in 1970, it was reconstructed and it now has an upper road deck which was added in 1980.
