Scotland Yard - part of the old Palace of Whitehall - about 1720. The Palace was an enormous collection of buildings and courtyards which was the main home of British monarchs until 1698 when much of the Palace was destroyed by fire. “Scotland Yard� is now better known as the Metropolitan Police headquarters at New Scotland Yard on the Victoria Embankment beside the River Thames - it had originally been in Great Scotland Yard.
