Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), a British statesman and Prime Minister from1834-35 and 1841-1846. As Home Secretary, he introduced important reforms to criminal law including the formation of the Metropolitan Police Force in 1829. Consequently, policemen were often known as bobbies or peelers.
