The Coconut Monkey Trap (Cumbuca) - 19th Century - stock illustration

The coconut monkey trap, used in Southern Asia to capture live monkeys (in South America is called a cumbuca Trap). A hole is cut in the top of a coconut just big enough for a monkeys hand, and staked to the ground on the other end. Placed inside is jaggery a product of unrefined sugarcane and rice. When the monkey grabs a handful he can not remove his hand thus being trapped. Vintage etching circa 19th century.
