The twin level Eads Bridge across the Mississippi River connecting St Louis, Missouri, with East St Louis, Illinois. A steel combined road and rail bridge, it was financed by Andrew Carnegie, designed and built by James B Eads and opened in 1874: when it was completed it was the longest arch bridge in the world.
