The Marzocco, Florence, sculpted by Donatello, halftone print, published 1891 - stock illustration

The Marzocco - the heraldic lion that is a symbol of Florence, and was apparently the first piece of public secular sculpture commissioned by the Republic of Florence, in the late 14th century. The depiction goes back to a sculpture created in 1420 by the sculptor Donatello (Italian sculptor, ca. 1386 - 1466), now in the Museo del Bargello. A sandstone copy stands in the Piazza della Signoria. Halftone print based on a photograph, published in 1891.
