The Vow of the First Jesuits: During his studies in Paris, Ignatius of Loyola befriended six fellow students: Peter Faber (1506–1546), Francis Xavier (1506–1552), Simão Rodrigues de Azevedo (1510–1579), Diego Laínez (1512–1565), Alfonso Salmerón (1515–1585), and Nicolás Bobadilla (1511–1590). On August 15, 1534 (the Feast of the Assumption), they together vowed poverty, chastity, and missionary work in Palestine in the chapel of the Martyrium of Saint Denis, in Montmartre. This vow is considered the founding act of a community that, from 1539 onward, called itself the Compañía de Jesús (Company of Jesus). Lithograph, published in 1850.
