The "Vaudois Oath" - a vow of the Waldensians (or Vaudois) to live their lives according to the Bible and to defend their faith. The Waldensians are a Christian movement founded in the 12th century in Lyon, France, by the merchant Peter Valdes. The Waldensians were persecuted by the Catholic Church and later joined the Reformed Church, particularly Calvinism. An important retreat area was the Western Alps, in Piedmont on the border with Savoy. Wood engraving, published in 1899.
