HMS Warspite, the Marine Society’s Training Ship in the River Thames at Woolwich, London. The Marine Society was founded in 1756 because of a shortage of volunteers for the British navy. In 1862, the Admiralty loaned the Society a new ship, the first to bear the name of HMS Warspite. From ‘The Boy’s Own Paper’ 1879-80, a British newspaper intended for boys which was at that time published by the Religious Tract Society and which featured stories, heroic deeds, facts, educational items and illustrations.
