This antique engraving shows an atmospheric moonlit scene in the Catskill Mountains, New York State, in around 1838. It is a steel engraving by John Rogers based on the work of William Henry Bartlett, an English artist. The bear and the trees cast long shadows across a frozen lake, and there are stars in the sky. At lower right, two hunters with rifles lie in wait, while in the distance is a figure perhaps hurrying away from the bear. W. H. Bartlett's artwork was bound into volumes based on their subjects. This antique print comes from a volume named (American Scenery), published by George Virtue in London (1837 - 1839). Text on this print: W. H. Bartlett ... J.
