The Pied Piper playing his pipe to children in the fields near the town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony, Germany, on a beautiful spring day. The legend of the Pied Piper tells how he removed a plague of rats from the town in 1284, luring them away by playing his pipe; however, when the townsfolk refused to pay him, he enticed away most of their children in the same manner. From “The Pied Piper of Hamelin†by Robert Browning, illustrated by Kate Greenaway, published by George Routledge & Sons, London, Glasgow, Manchester and New York in 1888.
