THURSDAY_02/21/02_St.Paul - - - - - - - The falling down old grain elevator on the Mississippi River at Chestnut Street is an historic structure, but remains an eyesore in a key part of the river that the city is trying to redevelop. To solve the problem, the city is holding a design contest to find ways to save the structure and incorporate it into a new urban village being built on the site. SEEN HERE - - - - Sanit Paul Riverfront Corporation director of special projects, Gregory Page, leads a tour of the old facility for the Star Tribune reporter and photographer. Between two large gain bins, and in front of the narrow cement stairway, is a device call a Humphry Man Lift, which was basically a vertical conveyor belt with a foot-step and hand-hold,used as a sort of an elevator for workers in pre-OSHA days.(Photo By DAVID BREWSTER/Star Tribune via Getty Images)
