circa 1780: Adam Smith (1723-1790). Scottish economist and philosopher. Professor of moral philosophy at University of Glasgow from 1752, published 'Theory of Moral Sentiments' 1759, wrote 'An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations,' published in 1776.
