circa 1780: Andrew Porter (1743-1813). Continental soldier. Commissioned a captain of marines from Philadelphia 1776, fought in New Jersey 1776-77 and Pennsylvania 1777 campaigns, joined Sullivan's Expedition against the Iroquois 1779, resigned his commission in 1781 to manufacture gunpowder. Rejoined the 4th Battalion of Continental Artillery 1782, postwar worked as a surveyor, a major general of Pennsylvania militia 1800. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
