(Adelanto) Aviation Archaeologist Davis Schurhammer, of Fullerton recovered these personal effects during a recent visit a 1945 crash site of B–24L Liberator in the Mojave Desert. The items included dog tags of two who were killed (one has been returned to the family) coins and a birthstone ring. Four airmen perished in this crash. The featureless, expansive desert has hidden this site, even though it's almost within earshot of Highway 395. (Photo by Don Kelsen/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images)
