Gilmore Stadium Midget Racing - Bill Vukovich/Allen Heath
HOLLYWOOD, CA — 1949: Bill Vukovich (No. 3) works to hold off Allen Heath (No. 20) during a Midget race at Gilmore Stadium. The career paths of these drivers were totally different. Vukovich went Indy Car racing and claimed back-to-back Indianapolis 500 victories at the Indianapolis (IN) Motor Speedway in 1953-54. Heath remained on the West Coast racing, primarily Midgets, where he was a consistent winner. He continued to win races despite losing his left hand in a 1953 racing accident. Heath ran with a metal hook attached to his left arm and became a fan favorite at the California tracks, not only for his great driving, but also for his dynamic personality. Late in his career, Heath ran Sprint Cars with the California Racing Association (CRA), winning 20 CRA features between 1957 and 1964. (Photo by ISC Images & Archives via Getty Images)
