HOLLYWOOD, CA — 1949: Bill Vukovich (No. 3) works to hold off Allen Heath (No. 20) during a Midget race at Gilmore Stadium. The career paths of these drivers were totally different. Vukovich went Indy Car racing and claimed back-to-back Indianapolis 500 victories at the Indianapolis (IN) Motor Speedway in 1953-54. Heath remained on the West Coast racing, primarily Midgets, where he was a consistent winner. He continued to win races despite losing his left hand in a 1953 racing accident. Heath ran with a metal hook attached to his left arm and became a fan favorite at the California tracks, not only for his great driving, but also for his dynamic personality.
