Cherokee rose, Rosa hystrix, Rosa laevigata, with spiny bud. Handcoloured copperplate engraved by Watts from an illustration by John Lindley from his own 'Rosarum Monographia, or a Botanical History of Roses,' London, Ridgeway, 1820. Lindley (1799-1865) was an English botanist who specialized in roses and orchids. Lindley wrote and illustrated this monograph when just 22 years old.
