US Coast Guard technicians view the crippled Ecuadoran oil tanker Jessica 22 January 2001 off the island of San Critobal in Galapagos Archipielago. The tanker ran aground 16 January 2001, releasing 600 tons of fuel oil over 1,200-square-kilometers (460-square-mile) of pristine sea off the Pacific islands, world famous as a nature reserve. The chain of islands is also a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation-protected site.
