Doctor Requires Patients To Sign Arbitration Agreement Before Receiving Non-emergency Care
PROVO, UTAH - OCTOBER 23: Dr. Jefforey Thorpe, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist, holds an arbitration agreement his office put into use almost a year ago October 23, 2003 in Provo, Utah. The Utah legislature passed a law last year allowing doctors to deny non-emergency service if their patients refused to sign an arbitration agreement. Arbitration agreements have long been used in consumer contracts such as credit cards but the medical field is starting to use them at the urging of their insurance companies to help reduce and limit law suits. Critics say doctors are hiding behind the agreements and patients will be harmed by giving up their right to go to trial. (Photo by George Frey/Getty Images)
