Bi-Plane Dusting Field with Pesticides
(Original Caption) Dusting a broccoli seed bed, the speeding plane throws out a tail of insect-killing dust that gets underneath as well as on top of the small leaves. It took airplane and multiple-spouted land machine dusters to combat the heaviest bug invasion in three years on the nation's huge truck farms this summer, and the effort paid off in bumper crops. Cucumber beetle, Mexican bean beetles, cabbage loopers and other damaging bugs can cause losses of millions of dollars to vegetable growers annually. This year, for the first time, full scale use was made of a new combination of insecticides with which farmers were able to meet insect enemies on common ground. This combination consists of the well-known rotenone, pyrethrins and a new chemical called piperonyl cyclonene, and is a development of U.S. Industrial Chemicals, Inc.
