ECUADOR-GALAPAGOS-OIL SPILL
Ecuadoran technicians and soldiers work on the Ecuadoran oil tanker Jessica 22 January 2001 off the island of San Cristobal in Galapagos Archipelago. The tanker ran aground 16 January 2001, releasing 600 tons of fuel oil over 1,200-square-kilometers (460-square-mile) of pristine sea off the Pacific islands, world famous as a nature reserve. The chain of islands is also a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization-protected site. The US Coast Guard has sent 11 cutters to help with the spill and syphon oil left in the tanker. (FILM) AFP PHOTO (Photo by AFP) (Photo by STR/AFP via Getty Images)
