circa 1865: Edward Alfred Pollard (1832-1872). American lawyer, historian and editor. An avid secessionist, defended enslavement as foundation of southern society, editor, Richmond, VA 'Examiner' 1861, championed Confederate success yet opposed Jefferson Davis. Captured while running blocade to England 1864, imprisoned 8 months. Postwar, he was the main Confederate apologist, but in 1868 took the 'Ironclad Oath' in allegiance to the US government.
