1797: Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton (1774-1821) Founder, first superior of the Sisters of Charity in U.S. Born to a wealthy N.Y. Protestant family, married William Seton 1794. After his death 1803, she converted to Catholicism 1805, opened a girl's school in Baltimore MD 1808, took vows 1813, mother superior of the Sisters of Charity.
