Brooks The Spanking Colonel
Former Mayor of Kensington Lieutenant-Colonel John Brooks (in bowler hat) after he had successfully sued the Sunday People newspaper, which had accused him of spanking the bottom of Manchester University student Susan Carr about 30 times, November 1974. The court ruled that the newspaper had exaggerated the truth, and Brooks was awarded damages - halfpenny - and as Brooks had won, the court ruled that the newspaper had to cover the legal costs of the trial.
