Carter, 78, on Friday 11 October 2002 won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for years of tireless effort as an international mediator. Carter, 78, was honoured for "his decades of untiring effort to fin peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development", the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.
