George Brydges Rodney
circa 1770: George Brydges Rodney (1718-1792). British admiral. At 13, by appointment of George II, entered Royal Navy, served in War of Austrian Succession 1740-48, Seven Years War 1756-63, destroyed French fleet at Le Havre '59. During American Revolution relieved besieged British forces at Gibraltar 1780, & enroute to West Indies defeated Spanish fleet off Cape St. Vincent.
