circa 1862: Gideon Johnson Pillow (1806-1878). American lawyer and soldier, from Tennessee. In the Mexican War 1846-47 was made brigadier general of Volunteers by President Polk 1846. Served with Scott from Vera Cruz to Mexico City. Resigned from the US Army to join the Confederacy in 1861. Fought at Belmont in 1861 and Fort Donelson in 1862. On administrative duty thereafter.
