RINIHUE, CHILE: In this undated 2015 photo, Doug Tomkins & Kristine Tompkins at home with their dog in Rinihue, Pumalin Park, Patagonia, Chile. Doug Tompkins died on December 8, 2015 of hypothermia after a kayaking accident in the Patagonia National Park of southern Chile. Tompkins co-founded and ran two clothing companies, including The North Face, the outdoor clothing company. Since leaving the business world in 1989, Tompkins had dedicated himself to environmental activism and land conservation. Along with his wife, Kristine Tompkins, he had conserved over 2 million acres of wilderness in Chile and Argentina, more than any other private individual.
