James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran, Scottish nobleman, (1826). Hamilton (c1516-1575) was Regent for the infant Mary Queen of Scots, but surrendered the Regency In 1554 to her mother, Mary of Guise, on the condition that he would be next in line after Queen Mary, if she died childless. When Mary's husband Francis II died in 1560, Hamilton tried to arrange for his son James to marry Mary, but he was imprisoned until he agreed to recognise Mary's baby son James, by her second husband Darnley, as the future King of Scotland.
