ROSLINDALE - FEBRUARY 16: John and Fran Scanlon are the color guard of their neighborhood, flying flags for different holidays, seasons, occasions, and causes. They have Christmas-themed flags, a claddagh ring for St. Patrick's Day, an Easter bonnet ("Everyone just loves the Easter bonnet" says Fran, who along with John is active in Roslindale's Sacred Heart Church), ears of corn for Thanksgiving, a Red Sox banner, beach chairs for summer, hearts for Valentines Day, and flags that have marked weddings and the birth of grandkids. The snowman flag stays up until just before Valentine's Day; a patriotic flag flies for Presidents Day. Says neighbor, Ann Morton Smith, who passes by their house, "I find it very uplifting to see they're so interested in marking the changing of the seasons." The family's most poignant flag goes up in October -- a breast cancer awareness banner to honor their daughter, Maura, who died from the disease 12 years ago.
