circa 1880: John Clark Ridpath (1840-1900). American educator and historian. Born poor in rural Indiana, became a teacher at age 17, graduated Asbury University 1863, professor, Thorntown Academy 1863-67, professor of languages, Baker University, Kansas 1867-69, professor of belles-lettres & history, Asbury University, Indiana from 1869, vice president, when Asbury became De Pauw University 1879, awarded doctorate of law, Syracuse Univ. 1880.
