John E. Smathers, the attorney for Desmond Ray, stands below the window through which a bullet ripped. On the night of Dec. 11, Desmond Eugene Ray was shot in the back by Prince George's police Cpl. Charles Ramseur. It was the fourth shooting Ramseur has been involved in. Ray, who was unarmed, is paralyzed for life because the bullet severed his spine and stayed lodged in his lung, according to his attorney. Police have suggested the shooting was a "mistake," but Ray's attorney, John Smathers, says the officer fired four or five shots, one of which sailed into the home of Ray's sister and went through the freezer.
