Archie Forbes

1878: Journalist Archibald Forbes (1838 - 1900), war correspondent during the Franco-Prussian War and foreign correspondent for the Daily News. Forbes, born in Moraryshire, enlisted with the Dragoons after attending a lecture given by famous war correspondent Sir WIlliam Russell. He left the army in 1867 and founded the 'London Scotsman' although he continued to write for many different titles. He was one of the first generation of journalists to send his reports by telegraph. He published many books including army tales in 'Barracks, Bivouacs and Battles' and collaborated with social commentators and journalists to write a futuristic story entitled 'The Great War of 189-'.
