Juab County Prosecutor David Leavitt (L) talks wit
PROVO, UNITED STATES: Juab County Prosecutor David Leavitt (L) talks with reporters along with Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, who made a surpise visit to the trial of Utah polygamist Tom Green, at 4th District court in Provo, Utah, 15 May, 2001. Green is on trial charged with polygamy and failure to pay child support 15 May, 2001. Green has five wives, three of them pregnant, and 29 children. The practice of having many wives was abandoned by mainstream Mormons a century ago as a condition of Utah statehood. The modern Church of Latter Day Saints condemns polygamy, but an estimated 30,000 fundamentalists still practice it in Utah, though most are not as open as Green.
