"The progress that white people believe in destroys nature," says the chief of the Mïratu village, Giliarde Juruna, who lives on the banks of the Xingu River in the Brazilian Amazon. Juruna's community is one of those affected by the massive Belo Monte hydroelectric dam, a controversial project in northern Brazil with the capacity to produce 11,000 megawatts of electricity. Former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (2003-2010), who is currently running for the a third term, clashed with Indigenous communities over his decision to push ahead with the dam, which was eventually inaugurated during the presidency of Dilma Rousseff in 2016.
