Madame Vestris
1833: Madame Eliza Vestris (1897 - 1856) plays Captain MacHeath in 'The Beggar's Opera'. When she took over the Royal Olympic Theatre in 1831, Madame Vestris became the first female theatre manager in London. She also shocked the country by playing such notorious male operatic roles as Don Giovanni. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
