Maxi, age 22 ties up a dog near his home on a hill in Canaan, outside of Port au Prince, on January 4, 2015, where he lives with his mother and a sister. Canaan is a settlement to the northeast of Port-au-Prince, where families and other victims of the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010 live. Canaan is without electricity and water, and the inhabitants of Canaan buy water in small shops. When the earthquake hit, Maxi was with friends playing cards, his legs were trapped and he was rescued the next day by neighbors and friends. He was in treatment for 9 months to save his leg, but after the constant infections, doctors decided to amputate his leg. Now he walks aided by crutches. Before he worked helping in a pharmacy, now is without employed. Five years after the powerful earthquake demolished Haiti's capital, more than a million homeless survivors have been rehoused, but thousands remain under canvas, or struggle with trauma and injury.
